Less STUFF, More CLARITY!
As we fill our lives with material objects, we do not realize that each of these objects carry weight. Many of these 'things' lose value as time passes. These 'things' turn into mental and visual baggage.
The attachment we feel for these possessions become a burden on our lives, physically and emotionally.
As you go through each of your belongings, ask yourself the following:
1. What purpose does it serve in my life?
2. Why am I holding on to it?
3. Would someone else be able to make more use of this item?
4. Is it worthy of the space it takes up in my life?
LISTS
Make a 'TO DO' list. PRIORITIZE! Crossing 'to do' items off a list feels great!
Make a 'DO NOT DO' list - This list can be just as important. This list probably includes 'distractions'
PROJECT VISUALIZATION
Try to visualize the end result of a project. This will help you focus on the best way to approach what you want to achieve.
SORT MAIL DAILY
Create general folders for your mail. Folder names may include Bills, Promotions, Reply Required, School Notices, To Be Filed, etc. Do a rough 'sort' every day so you can tackle a category in depth when you have more time during the week. Don't let it build up beyond one week. Natural categories will evolve based on your personal mail. Do NOT leave these file folders on the counter. This would defeat the purpose of DECLUTTERING. Find a place for these folders that is easily accessible.
CLOSET CONTROL
At the beginning of each season, hang all clothes with hanger head pointing out into the room. When you are ready to re-hang after wearing, place hanger head toward closet wall. At the end of the season, consider giving away/consigning clothes that have hangers in original position. YOU HAVE NOT WORN THEM ALL SEASON!
BEDDING:
After washing sheet sets, store fitted, flat and pillowcase set in one of the pillowcases. When ready to reuse, grab the one pillowcase.
STORAGE AREAS & CLOSETS:
When reorganizing an area, it's always more efficient to empty the space completely. When placing items back, CATEGORIZE & PRIORITIZE!! Items used most get front row!
THINK:
When contemplating whether an item is a keeper, ask yourself, does this possession still add value to my life? Or, is this possession actually 'baggage'? Be honest with yourself.
CATEGORIES:
When tackling a clutter problem, start with 3 or 4 categories....
o KEEP
o DONATE/CONSIGN
o TOSS
o TO BE DETERMINED
(Make sure the 'to be determined' pile isn't your largest pile!)
